Tawau Airport is located about 18 miles away from Tawau that falls under the state of Sabah in Malaysia. This airport not only serves international passengers but also has an immigration counter to allow foreign nationals to complete the required official formalities before they enter Malaysia. The airport is also renowned for the wide array of facilities being offered to inbound passengers which includes multiple counters that provide car hire for the comfort and convenience of customers.
A melting pot of cultural and religious diversity
Tawau is among the top three largest town in the state of Sabah and surrounded by the Sulu Sea. This country has a conflicted history with invasions from the British and was almost completely devastated after the world war with only the Tawau bell tower remaining intact. This city later became the epicenter of the Indonesian confrontation and was invaded again during this era. The airport hosts a small picture gallery that recounts the atrocities of war.
Tawau stands as one of the most diverse cities in Malaysia and the general population is divided into two major religious sects – Muslims and Christians. This city plays hosts to many global citizens including – Chinese, Bamiputras, Bajau, Murut, Indian and others. There are multiple tourists spots in Tawau and most of them are easily accessible from Tawau Airport by hiring a car–
- Tawau Cultural Festival – This cultural festival is celebrated once a year and remains as the epitome of tourism in Malaysia.
- Tawau Bell Tower - This tower was built by the Japanese after the closure of World War I and is dedicated to the close relations between Japan and Great Britain that helped these countries to survive the war.
- Japanese War Cemetery – This historical location is the burial ground of many Japanese soldiers and serves as a startling reminder of the damages of war. It is recommended to use a car hire to visit this memorial since it is located outside city limits.
Tawau is a must visit city if you are visiting the Sabah province of Malaysia. After visiting this city my myth about all Malaysian city being home to Muslim or Christian population was broken. Attending the Cultural fest held in Tawau was a great experience, I have never before experienced such deep cultural influence in any other part of Malaysia.
