The Nyköping Airport, also called the Stockholm Skavsta Airport, ranks on the 3rd place in Sweden’s airports list and on 2nd in Stockholm’s. Designated for low-cost passenger and cargo airlines, the airport bears the name of the capital of Sweden, although it is located at a 100km distance from it, in the outskirts of the Nyköping town.
The history of the Nyköping Airport runs back to the 1930s, when the construction of an airfield began near the Skavsta farm, a few kilometers outside Nyköping. This is how the airport got its second name, the Stockholm Skavsta Airport, used more often nowadays. It was the home of the F11 air wing, the most important air wing of the Swedish Air Force, from the days of World War II until 1980. The airport was open to civil services in 1984 and in 1998 the Nyköping municipality sold the airport’s largest number of shares to the British TBI company, making the Nyköping Airport a privately held airport, one of the few in Sweden.
The Irish Ryanair airline is the most important airline operating in the Nyköping Airport. Since 1997, when Ryanair opened the first Skavsta-London route, the Irish company established its Scandinavian headquarters in Skavsta and opened more than 30 new routes. Other low cost operators, such as WizzAir and local Gotlandsflyg also started operating in Skavsta, bringing the passenger traffic to about 2.5 million people per year. Sweden is a very visited country.
The modern facilities of the Nyköping Airport accommodate 40+ companies. You will find a handful of car hire companies such as: Avis, Sixt, Hertz and Budget. If you want to save some money, there are coaches departing hourly to Stockholm City Center, provided by Flygbussarna. Transport shuttles to other Swedish airports, such as Södertälje or Norrköping are also available. Other transport options to and from the Nyköping Airport are by train (the local Nyköping railway station), local bus (online booking available) and taxi. If you choose to take a taxi, keep in mind that you have to book in advance, as the ride to Stockholm takes about an hour and a half. But Sweden has invested a lot in public transportation to assure a low cost ride and comfort in the same time.
The Nyköping Airport is packed with every airport service you may need. Fast check-in (closes 40 minutes before the flight), ATMs, Wi-Fi (provided by The Cloud), a foreign exchanges office (Forex Bank), baby & children facilities, lost/damaged luggage office, lost & found office, handicapped assistance and mobility support. The terminal also hosts a food court with coffee shops, bars, gift and souvenirs shops. This is a pleasant way to greet its visitors and Sweden knows it.
