Koltsovo airport is located 16km southeast of Yekaterinburg, Russia. It has sixty aircraft stands and is the 5th largest airport in Russia. History of Koltsovo airport
The airport was started as a military airport in 1930 to satisfy the needs of Air Force institute of USSR. The first Soviet Rocket Plane BI-1 took of this airport in 1942. Next year, by the orders of Commander of Air Forces, the airport began civil air transportation. Hence, in the year 1945 the airport became a civil airport from a military one. The hotel with 100 seats was built in 1954 and then the airport just kept growing. Then in 1963 the new hotel liner with 235 seats was inaugurated.
In 2005 the establishment of new borders of the city took place. This event resulted in the combination of a village in Koltsovo into the airport, Yekaterinburg.
In June 2009 a runway of 3025 meters and a new control tower were put into operation. The growth of the airport continued and in 2010 fourteen new carriers were introduced. The airport served 2.75 million people that year.
The airport only became busier. In 2011 the number of passenger for the first time in twenty years, exceeded 3 million. The exact number of passengers served that year was 3.356 million.
Even still, the up gradations to the airport were not stopped. On July 24, 2012 a new commercial complex was opened on the airport. The total area of the complex was 19,185 meters. The ceremony was attended by the governor of Sverdlovsk oblast.
