Sarmellek Airport, also known as Hévíz-Balaton Airport and previously known as Sármellék International Airport, is a Hungarian international airport located west of Lake Balaton, 1 kilometre or 0.6 miles south-southwest of the village of Sármellék, Zala County and Keszthely. Lake Balaton, Hungary's most important holiday resort, and the thermal spas of Hévíz and Zalakaros are located nearby and are the usually the primary point of interest for its visitors.
Landing in Sarmellek Airport puts you in the heart of the Hungarian tourist attractions. If this is your first time in the Lake Balaton region, you should definitely stay a while and enjoy in the atmosphere of the most popular provincial resorts in Hungary. Between it the spas, the hotels or the lakeside, a million bookings a year in Hévíz show that there’s plenty of fun to be had. Whether its excitement or peace and quiet you’re looking for, the region has it all.
Sarmellek Airport doesn’t have on-site hotels, but the broader area is littered with resorts of all shapes and sizes – be it hotels or private accommodation. The accommodations available in the area range all the way up to luxurious and offer a wide variety of activities and diversions. Hiring transport from the airport to a hotel you’ve booked a reservation in is just the first step. Since the resorts have so much to offer to tourists, staying in one spot will most likely not be enough. Having a taxi operator on hand or renting a car will let you sample the delights at your own leisure and find places and activities you may want to have closer to you on your next visit.
Access to and from Sarmellek Airport is available by car, car hire or taxi. Parking is not accounted for by the airport itself due to its nature as a transit spot to one of the many hotels in the area. However, local taxi operators and car hire companies will take you anywhere you want to go and take you from the hotels back to the airport when you are ready to go back.
Sarmellek Airport itself can provide little in the way of services you’d expect from a hotel or a mall. The surrounding area, however, is full of activities and conveniences. Drinks and sandwiches can be purchased at the Sarmellek Airport, but, as with accommodations, you will have to look elsewhere for restaurants and retail services. Luckily, the airport is well connected to the tourist industry and has recently been reopened after having financial troubles. The chances of renovation and expansion are pretty high, and the once military airport is well on its way to transforming into more tourist friendly one. In the meanwhile, choose your transport and enjoy the countryside!
