Knowing this City is in fact not too tricky, in view of the fact that the majority of its exotic sights are inside a reasonably small area easily reached by car hire. The Old City or the Altstadt is a packed together locale between the Salzach River and the jutting projection of Mönchsberg. The city’s cathedral and interlinked squares that surround it make up what was the religious hub. It was around this center the main churches and the old residence of the archbishop is set.
Entry to all the churches in Salzburg is free. At the rear the Old City emerges suddenly the Mönchsberg cliffs which get crowned by Hohensalzburg Fortress towards the east. Just across the Salzach River, in a tiny section between the Kapuzinerberg cliffs and the riverbank, we find Steingasse, a constricted medieval street in which the working class lived. The Mirabell Palace plus its beautiful gardens lie towards the northern of the cliffs of Kapuzinerberg. All these exotic and historical venues are easily reached with a car hire. One gets a broad view of numerous beautiful peaks of the Alpines from the city.
The rulers of this city practiced construction on an impressive scale from the reign of Wolf-Dietrich von Raitenau during the late 16th century. At only 28, he visualized "his" Salzburg becoming something like a Rome situated in the Alps. He saw a cathedral more majestic than St. Peter's. He planned a palace as good similar to a Roman palace. His personal Mirabell Gardens were to flaunt the most stylish Italianate horticulture. After his overthrow by the Bavarian rulers, all the cultured successors continued with the grand dream and design of the city. The end result is that the city's numerous excellent buildings merge into one harmonious lot. A ride within this city with a hired car will show you that probably there is no other place worldwide with so unified a blossoming of elaborate architecture.
However, times have changed and so have the people of the city. It is therefore not a surprise to know that now Salzburg is the residence of the most striking Museum der Moderne.
