6. Siena, Italy

The gem of Tuscany is truly a sight to behold—from its picture-perfect city and landscapes to its mouthwatering gastronomic delights. The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and while there are hundreds of thousands of tourists that visit this historic city, you do not have to deal with an overwhelming crowd of people like in Rome. Siena is home to numerous art galleries and museums, nestled within a cityscape that will transport you back in time. Make sure to catch the Palio, a local horse race held bi-annually. Do not miss out on visiting the Palazzo Chigi (home to the premiere musical conservatory Accademia Musicale Chigiana), the Basilica dell’Osservanza, Santa Maria dei Servi, the Sanctuary of Santa Caterina (admittedly the city’s most famous resident), and the Medicean Fortress

7. Budapest, Hungary

Europe is filled with amazing cities, and one of the places you should definitely see this 2014 is Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Located in the upper central part of the country, Budapest offers a wide variety of attractions and activities for those who want to travel off the beaten path. The District 8 neighborhood is one of the hidden gems of the city, with its well-preserved streets, courtyards, and buildings. Shop for unique find in the Antique Rows, and drink with the friendly locals in the Ruin Pubs. Design lovers will definitely enjoy WAMP, the monthly market where local contemporary artists and designers sell their wonderful creations.

8. Salzburg, Austria

A city located in the heart of Austria, Salzburg is undeniably one of the more famous Austrian cities. However, there is more to Salzburg than The Sound of Music. The baroque architecture is undeniably lovely—make sure to back up your photos or bring extra memory cards as you will never run out of thinks to take pictures of. Drop by the Hohensalzburg Fortress (with dramatic views of the Alps and the city), Getreidegasse and Alter Markt Square for shopping, and the Mozarts Geburtshaus for some history on one of the most famous sons of the city, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

9. Florence, Italy

While it is true that Florence (or Firenze) is one of the most popular tourist traps in Europe, there are still plenty of things to see and do for travelers looking to tread the not-so-beaten path. Make sure to visit the Piazza Michelangelo to get away from the throngs of people wandering around the streets, or rest your tired feet in the delightful rose garden along the banks of the Arno River.

10. Vienna, Austria

This is the second entry for Austria, but really, it is a wonderful country that deserves more of your holiday time. Again, Vienna is not really a secret destination, but there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path gems in the city. Head over to the Austrian Folklore Museum, the Naschmarkt, the Imperial Furniture Collection, and the Sigmund Freud Museum. Wear comfortable shoes, and take advantage of the unlimited free travel with the Vienna Card (around 20 euros).
