Petra, Jordan : One of the New 7 Wonders of the World
This place is mostly referred to as a sacred destination. Very little is known about this temple which was discovered in 1992, but it is believed to have been constructed in the first century. Even with that, historical details of the temple are available both online and offline. One known fact is that Petra was discovered by archeologists from the Brown University and excavations are still going on to date.
Assumptions have it that this was initially used as a worship place going by its name. Today it’s a key tourist attraction after the discovery of a theater and other documented records that could point to this place having been used as an assembly or palace. Before its discovery in 1992, this temple was covered by debris and dust in such a way that it could not be seen easily. The excavation works that are taking place at the site are aimed at unearthing more about the temple that has a unique architectural design.
Many tourists to Jordan never leave the country without paying a visit to this temple. It is a historic site that holds huge history to learn about.
Key Attractions at Petra
Apart from the temple being an attraction for tourists, there are many sights inside and outside that you can explore. The Lower Temenos is one such attraction that can be accessed from the interior using staircases. It is constructed using hexagonal stones and enclosed by colonnades that pile up to form 120 columns. The Upper Temenos is where actual temple activities are confined and you can visit this as well.
The other place to visit within the temple is West Exedra where artifacts like ceramics, lamps and coins are stored. Its role in shaping up the temple into a historical site is undisputable. This place has a carving of a huge elephant that has all the characteristics of uniqueness. Inside the Temple, you will see an Odeon that is exceptional in its own measure. It has seats forming up five rows while its shape is semi-circular. As the quarrying goes on, more and more attractions will come up in due course.
When to Visit
The Petra Temple is open for tourists most days of the week from 8am to 5pm, but these times are extended sometimes. You might not be able to access the temple during public holidays.
