Essential Tips for Your European Trip

It is the dream of many a traveller to explore Europe—a continent of interesting countries with a diverse range of cultures and customs that would amaze even the most cynical of travellers. However, there are a lot of people who are intimidated of traveling across Europe.

Some think that it would be extremely tiring and hectic (of course, when you are trying to visit 12 countries in two weeks, things are bound to get hectic) some think that the people are snooty, and of course, many think that it would be extremely expensive.

With these tips, traveling across Europe will sound more like an exciting yet doable adventure, and you do not have to spend your entire fortune while enjoying your trip.

Take advantage of the wonderful train system

Traveling by train is not a very popular options in some parts of the world, especially if a certain country has no infrastructure for it or most destinations are accessible only but cars or buses. Europe is not one of those places—the train system is excellent and links many countries. Most of Europe is landlocked, and many countries offer a unified visa system. Just make sure to secure the necessary travel documents (the Schengen visa offers entry to over twenty countries that are members of the European Union) and a train pass. If you are planning to wander across Europe for a couple of weeks, then this is the best option for you. You can explore the continent without paying for expensive plane tickets.

Join the walking tours

One of the best features of European destinations is that there is much to be seen in single locations—the cities are wonderful, and most do not have the extremely hectic and busy ambiance of many a modern city. You do not really need a car to get around many European cities; just a pair of comfortable walking shoes (although the Italians and Spaniards will judge you for poor footwear choices, such as flashy sneakers) and comfortable clothes.

Almost every major European city has its own walking tour—some will allow you to join for free, while some will charge a minimal fee. European cities are filled with beautiful architecture and many little things that you cannot find at home. Plus, you get to meet a lot of people—some might be your new friends!

Make sure to dress appropriately

Nothing screams “TOURIST!” more than shorts and flip-flops, and Europeans tend to have a dour attitude towards people they think are not dressed appropriately. Other than dressing for the weather, make sure that you brought modest and comfortable clothing for visits to holy sites and other such important places.

Do not assume that everyone speaks English

Only in the United Kingdom will you find a destination where everyone speaks English. The rest of Europe does not, however—and the British Isles are separated from the rest of the continent by a body of water. Some travellers survive with a handy dictionary or phrase book, but pronunciation can sometimes be a hindrance. If you could, try to enrol in a language course to learn one of the major European languages (it is quite easy to find French, German, Italian, or Spanish classes almost everywhere) to communicate with the locals.
