Rossano Scalo is both a commune and a town located in the Southern part of Italy within Calabria Province. The city is located about 3 kilometers from the Taranto Gulf and is famous for its alabaster and marble quarries that can be visited using public means or a car hire. This is also the seat of an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church besides having a castle and a cathedral of note. Two previous Popes hail from this town besides Saint NilusThe Younger. Rossano Scalo can be accessed through the airports located in Crotone, Lamezia Terme or even via Reggio Calabria. The town boasts of a railway.
Main attractions
The main monument is the Cathedral which has three apses and a nave having two aisles. The baptismal font and the bell tower of the Cathedral date back to the 14th century, whilst most of the residual ornaments also date back to earlier centuries, 17th and 18th. The church is famed for the very old icon depicting the Madonna Acheropita, (although this is now situated at the Diocesan Museum). The celebrated Codex Rossanensis got revealed in the year 1879 in the church sacristy.
