Ivrea has an excellent historical character with a number of old buildings. The castle or Rocca built-in 13 centuries is one of the brilliant architecture of prehistoric Italy. It follows a quadrangular plan with four round towers constructed with bricks. One of the towers remains damaged after it was struck by lightning in 16 century. The castle was never rebuilt or repaired by tourism authorities. Next, main sight which one can visit with a short drive in a car from the castle is the cathedral built-in the 4th century, which follows a Romanesque style. The town also has a museum called Pier Alessandro Garda, which displays interesting archaeological collection of art pieces. Another museum is the open air Museum that follows a modern architecture planned by leading architects of 1950s. There are plenty other monumental spots to visit at this place. Some of them are Old Bridge, Biblioteca, Capitolare, San Bernardino, and Old Bridge.
Ivrea is famous for Battle of the Oranges carnival, which takes place in February. This is a peculiar festival where nine teams throw oranges at each other. In the olden days, people used to throw apples at each other, this changed when Duke’s head was chopped in the battle. About 400 tons of oranges are thrown from one person to the other. Horse carts loaded with oranges arrive at the scene of fighting with rebelling fighters. During the carnival, various traditional foods are prepared at the restaurants. One of the common one is Piedmont peasant staple called as Fagioli grassi. It is mix of beans, bacon rind and sausages. With a car it becomes convenient to visit all these places and complete your tour in time.
