Corfu (also known as Kerkyra or Kerkira) is a city of slightly more than 100,000 people. It is located in the Ionian Islands region of Greece, and is located very close to the border of Albania.
This being Greece, it is ancient. The earliest recorded reports of the city are from a tablet (the stone kind, not the modern-day computer-equivalent) from 2,300 years ago. Some scholars believe that it was referenced in Homer’s Odyssey. Its entire history has been somewhat quiet and peaceful, although after the decline and fall of the Greek and Roman empires, it fell under the rule of the Venetians for a few centuries.
This being located on an island--and a relatively small island, at that--the only way to get to Corfu is through the seaport or the airport. Once in it, it is best to hire a car. When you have the car hire, you can see the place’s natural and man-made wonders. Corfu is large enough to be divided into different districts or areas, each of which have something to behold.
- In Old Town, you can see the Esplanade with an extremely large parade ground and park; the Old Fortress, which is separated from other areas by a moat; and the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George
- Nymphes, a village with several myths, legends and traditions. Be sure to ask the locals or tour guides for these awe-inspiring stories
- Kynopiastes, a village having wonderful old mansions, monastery, museum, marble church, along with renowned restaurants and taverns
- Lakones. To get to this village you may need your car hire, but to fully appreciate it you should get out and hike to imbibe the spectacular views from the hill.
- Roda, with exquisite beaches and restaurants (including a Chinese restaurant) and entertaining nightlife.
- Achilleion. This is a palace that was built under the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria’s rule. It was built to honor Achilles.
This being Greece, and especially the Ionian Islands, it is beautiful. In fact, this relatively small city has been the shooting location of no fewer than 39 films, documentaries, television series and movies. It was filmed extensively for the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only and the film The Greek Tycoon based on the life of Aristotle Onassis.
