Dusseldorf is a city of almost 600,000 people, slightly more than twice that in its urban area, and has the enormous number of 11,300,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area (known as the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region). The city is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany.
There may have been some homes or Bedouins in the area as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. but the first record of the city was in 1135, at a time when soldiers occupied this area as a well-fortified outpost. For 800 years afterwards, it was fairly quiet. Quiet is good because there are no counter-productive events like war, allowing industry and people to grow and prosper. Toward the end of World War II, though, and because of the city’s industry and contribution to Germany’s war efforts, the British bombed it extensively and frequently. In the 70 years since then, it has grown again, especially in terms of trade, service industries and administration.
Once you arrive, either at the Dusseldorf train station or the airport, be sure to car hire. The city is extremely large, both in terms of population and area. Because it is large, this section will focus exclusively on one thing
- The Kirmes Fun Fair, also known as the Largest Fair on the Rhine. It attracts over four million visitors each year, even though it is for only nine days, beginning in the third week of every July. It features amusement park rides, vendors, food tents and--this being Germany--beer tents.
- This fun fair was founded to honor the city’s patron saint, Apollinaris of Ravenna and began in 1435. In 1970, the specific location was changed to its current location, near the city’s Old Town historical area. In 1970 it began to be known as “The Largest Fair on the Rhine” and it contributes greatly to the economy of the city.
- For each of the nine days of this event, there are different attractions. On Tuesday, the event is “Senior shooting competition on the fairgrounds”. I do not know if this means that it is a competition among seniors, or a competition to shoot seniors. I can only hope that it is the former.
You do not need nor want a car hire to explore this fun fair, and I do not know how significant this attraction is among the many, many unmentioned attractions. Regardless of whether or not it is the unique selling point of Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf is also known for the above-mentioned trades, services and administration.
