Family Holiday Destinations: Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark prides itself for being one of the most family-friendly destinations in Europe, if not the world. Copenhagen, located in the eastern part of Zealand, is the capital city of Denmark, and also its capital in terms of fun for the whole family. At present, Copenhagen is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of the country, with many exciting attractions for kids of all ages and the young at heart.
Here are some of the best places to see and things to do while on a family holiday in Copenhagen.
Visit one of the oldest amusement parks in the world
Copenhagen is home to the Tivoli Gardens, which opened in 1843. Tivoli Park is one of the most popular theme parks in the world, with over four million visitors every year. Ever since it opened nearly two hundred years ago, the park has offered a wide variety of attractions, including Oriental-style buildings, restaurants, cafés, merry-go-rounds, scenic railways, and theatres. At present, Tivoli Gardens offers exciting attractions such as the Rutschebanen, a wooden roller coaster built a hundred years ago. The Daemonen roller coaster is also a must-try, with its zero-G roll and Immelmann loop that will definitely satisfy adrenaline junkies of all ages. The tallest carousel in the world—the Star Flyer—is also a popular attraction inside the Tivoli Gardens.
Although not in Copenhagen, making the trip to Billund for LEGOLAND is a must. The theme park boasts of exciting Lego-themed rides such as The Haunted House, Polar Land, the Pirate Lagoon, and more.
Sight-seeing and historical tours
Copenhagen also prides itself for having a wonderful public transportation system which allows you to take your family around the city without much hassle. A 24-hour public transportation ticket and a harbour ferry ticket will allow you to use all the bus, trains, ferry, and metro services in the city for a whole lot cheaper. Paying adults can take two children under 12 each for free.
With your public transportation concerns completely covered, make sure to head to the Amalienorg Palace, home of the Danish Queen, at noon to witness the changing of the guards. This could be followed by a tour through the Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Reception Rooms, as well as the Rosenborg Castle (shown right).
For breathtaking views of the city, you can head over to the Round Tower that allows you to see stunning vistas of the old town. If you are seeking for an unforgettable sight-seeing experience, make sure to go up the Vor Frelsers Kirke through the exterior of the dragon spire for truly incredible views.
For combined education and entertainment, you can bring your kids to the numerous museums in the city, including the National Gallery of Denmark, the National Museum, the Zoological Museum, the Guinness Museum of World Records, The Worker’s Museum, the Tycho Brahe Planetarium, the Experimentarium, and Denmark’s Aquarium.
There are also a good number of aqua parks in the country, which are perfect for a hot summer day with your family. Must-visit aqua parks include the Harbour bath Islands Brygge right in the middle of Copenhagen.
